Julian Sartorius at the Tinguely Museum
Julian Sartorius is an outstandingly creative and progressive Swiss drummer and I first came across him when I went to listen to a concert of the Collin Vallon Trio at the Bird's Eye Jazz Club in Basel where they introduced their CD "Le Vent", a masterpiece. The announcement that he would perform solo on January 8th in the midst of the "musical machinery" created by Jean Tinguely, as part of the exhibition "Music Machines / Machine Music" at the museum which carries his name, made me curious to go there and listen to the concert. Well, it was amazing, and I am actually not sure if the word "solo" is appropriate, because it was at times rather an interaction between his improvisation in the spirit of the machine sounds and the sounds themselves which sporadically came out of the artworks. I am quite sure that Jean Tinguely would have been extremely happy about this concert and the dialogue between a human and his machines, as was the audience which came to listen.
